What is the difference between combinational and sequential circuits?

A combinational circuit's output depends only on its present inputs (adders, MUXes, decoders); it has no memory. A sequential circuit's output depends on present inputs and stored state, so it contains memory elements (latches or flip-flops) and, if synchronous, a clock. Counters, shift registers and FSMs are sequential.

MUX-based design: implement an AND gate and an XOR gate using only 2:1 multiplexers.

A 2:1 MUX gives Y = S'I0 + S I1. AND: select = A, I0 = 0, I1 = B, so Y = AB. XOR: select = A, I0 = B, I1 = B'. B' needs one more MUX: select = B, I0 = 1, I1 = 0. OR: select = A, I0 = B, I1 = 1.

What does fork() do, and how many times does printf run if a program calls fork() three times in sequence and then prints once?

fork() creates a child process that is a copy of the caller; it returns 0 in the child and the child's PID in the parent. Each fork() doubles the number of processes, so n sequential calls give 2^n processes. Three fork() calls followed by one printf print 8 times.

What is priority inversion and how is it fixed?

A high-priority task waits for a lock held by a low-priority task, and a medium-priority task pre-empts the low one, so the high task is blocked indefinitely by lower-priority work. Fixes: priority inheritance (the lock holder temporarily runs at the waiter's priority) or the priority ceiling protocol.

What is virtual memory, and how do paging and the page table work?

Virtual memory gives each process its own address space, which can exceed physical RAM. Virtual memory is split into fixed-size pages and RAM into frames; the page table maps page number to frame number while the offset is unchanged. The TLB caches recent translations. A missing page causes a page fault, and a replacement policy (FIFO, LRU) picks the victim frame.

Signals and systems

What is the difference between Fourier series and Fourier transform?

The Fourier series represents a periodic signal as a sum of harmonics at integer multiples of its fundamental frequency, so its spectrum is discrete (lines). The Fourier transform handles aperiodic signals and gives a continuous spectrum, X(f) = integral of x(t) e^(-j2*pi*f*t) dt. Example: a rectangular pulse transforms to a sinc function.

Is SSIR the same as Samsung R&D Institute Bangalore (SRI-B)?

No. SSIR (Samsung Semiconductor India Research) works on Samsung's semiconductor businesses: memory, System LSI and foundry. SRI-B is a separate Samsung Electronics R&D centre in Bengaluru with divisions such as Android, Tizen, telecom and wireless terminals. They recruit separately, so check which one is visiting your campus.

Does SSIR hire ECE freshers for hardware roles?
