Most placement preparation advice in India assumes you want a software job: DSA, LeetCode, system design. If you study mechanical, civil, electrical, ECE or chemical engineering and want a job in your own field, the hiring process is different, and so is what you should practise.
Short answer: core jobs for freshers come through three doors. Private core companies hire Graduate Engineer Trainees through campus drives with a written test and a technical interview on your branch. Public sector companies (PSUs) hire through either GATE scores or their own computer-based exam, and in 2026 more of them use their own exam than most students realise. Government engineering posts come through exams such as ESE, SSC JE and RRB JE. You prepare for each door differently.
Door 1: private core companies
Companies such as L&T, Tata Motors, Siemens, Bosch, Reliance, Cummins and Tata Steel hire freshers mainly as Graduate Engineer Trainees (GETs) through campus drives. The usual pattern is an online test (aptitude plus your branch's technical subjects), a technical interview on fundamentals and your projects, an HR interview and a medical.
- L&T: online test of domain knowledge and aptitude, technical interview, HR interview, medical; a 65% aggregate with no backlogs is expected.
- Siemens: a 91-question, 80-minute online test, then technical and HR interviews that are sometimes merged.
- Bosch: core-branch freshers join a 12-month Graduate Apprentice programme through campus drives.
- Tata Steel: an off-campus Aspiring Engineers Programme (online test, behavioural assessment, interview) as well as campus Management Trainee drives.
What decides these interviews is branch fundamentals you can explain, not memorised definitions: strength of materials and thermodynamics for mechanical, RCC and concrete for civil, machines and power systems for electrical, digital and analog electronics for ECE, mass and heat transfer for chemical. Expect questions on your final-year project too.

Door 2: PSUs, and which ones still use GATE
Many students still assume every PSU hires through GATE. That is no longer true. Based on the latest recruitment adverts we checked in September 2026:
- Through GATE: NTPC (Engineering Executive Trainee), POWERGRID (Engineer Trainee; in the ET-2026 cycle GATE carried 85%, group discussion 3% and interview 12%), GAIL (Executive Trainee) and NPCIL (Executive Trainee). ISRO and DRDO also shortlisted recent fresher cycles on GATE scores before an interview.
- Through their own computer-based exam, not GATE: BHEL (its 2025 Engineer Trainee drive used a 240-question, 150-minute exam, with final merit 75% exam and 25% interview), IOCL (own exam since its 2025 drive, then group discussion, group task and interview), ONGC (an 85-question, 2-hour exam, then interview), SAIL (a 200-mark exam, then group discussion and interview), HPCL and BEL.
This changes your plan. If your target PSU uses GATE, your GATE score is the whole shortlist and GATE preparation is placement preparation. If it runs its own exam, you need that exam's pattern and aptitude practice as well, and a weak GATE year does not shut you out. Recruitment rules change between cycles, so always read the current notification on the company's own site before you plan around it.

Door 3: government engineering exams
For government engineering posts outside PSUs, the main exams are UPSC ESE (central engineering services), SSC JE and RRB JE (junior engineer posts). They reward the same core subjects as GATE plus general studies and reasoning. placd has a page per exam with the eligibility and the pattern, and a free 25-question sample for most of them (RRB JE does not have one yet), starting at placd.in/government.
A 12-week plan for core-branch placements
- Weeks 1 to 4: your branch's core subjects. Two or three subjects at a time, practised as questions, not re-read notes. Mechanical: SOM, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, manufacturing. Civil: RCC, concrete technology, structural analysis, geotech. Electrical: machines, power systems, protection, power electronics. ECE: digital, analog, signals, communication, and Verilog or embedded C if you want VLSI or embedded roles. Chemical: mass transfer, heat transfer, reaction engineering, thermodynamics.
- Weeks 5 to 6: aptitude. Every written test has it. Thirty minutes a day on quantitative aptitude and reasoning is enough for most drives.
- Weeks 7 to 8: your target companies. Pick five, read how each hires, and practise their test pattern. Decide which PSUs you are aiming for and whether they use GATE.
- Weeks 9 to 10: projects and interviews. Write down what you built in your final-year project, what went wrong and what you would change. Practise explaining a core concept out loud in two minutes.
- Weeks 11 to 12: mock interviews. Do at least two full technical interviews on your branch before the real one, with someone, or something, that asks follow-up questions.

FAQs
Do mechanical engineers need to learn coding for placements? Not for core jobs. Private core companies and PSUs test your branch subjects and aptitude. Coding helps only if you also apply to IT service companies, which hire from every branch.
Is GATE necessary for PSU jobs? For some PSUs, yes: NTPC, POWERGRID, GAIL and NPCIL shortlisted on GATE in their latest cycles. Others, including BHEL, IOCL, ONGC, SAIL, HPCL and BEL, ran their own exams. Check the current notification for each one.
What salary can a core engineering fresher expect? It varies widely. PSU pay is published: NTPC's E1 grade starts at a ₹40,000 basic, and ISRO and DRDO Scientist posts start at a ₹56,100 basic (Level 10), before allowances. Many private core GET offers start lower; third-party salary sites put Cummins and ABB freshers at roughly ₹3.5 to ₹8 LPA, while semiconductor design roles for ECE pay far more.
