ABB India

Core · core branches incl. EE, ECE, ME· Updated

ABB India hires engineering freshers mainly as Graduate Engineer Trainees through campus drives: an online test of aptitude plus core technical questions, sometimes a group discussion, then technical and HR interviews. Electrical, electronics, instrumentation and mechanical students are the main targets. Reported GET pay varies widely, from about ₹3.5 LPA to ₹8 LPA.

Who can apply

  • B.E. / B.Tech; EEE, ECE, Instrumentation and Mechanical are the main campus branches, with CSE / IT for software roles (reported)
  • 60% in Class X, Class XII and graduation, each counted separately (reported)
  • No active backlogs when you apply (reported)

Interview process

  1. 1Online testAptitude plus core technical MCQs on electrical machines, switchgear and control systems. ABB does not publish an official question count or section timing.
  2. 2Group discussionTopic-based GD with about five minutes to prepare, reported for some campus drives.
  3. 3Technical interviewTaken by senior engineers: induction motor behaviour, MCB and circuit breaker selection, earthing, transformers, basic power systems, and your final-year project.
  4. 4HR interviewMotivation, relocation and background questions.

Questions to expect in ABB India interviews

Drawn from reported fresher tests and interviews (sources below), with short answers. Practise more on placd.

Induction motors

What are cogging and crawling in an induction motor?

Cogging (magnetic locking): the motor refuses to start when the number of stator slots equals, or is an integer multiple of, the rotor slots, because strong alignment forces lock the rotor. Crawling: the motor runs steadily at about one-seventh of synchronous speed because the 7th space harmonic of the air-gap flux produces its own torque. Skewed rotor slots and suitable slot combinations reduce both.

Protection

What is the difference between C-curve and D-curve MCBs?

They differ in the instantaneous (magnetic) trip level. A C-curve MCB trips at 5-10 times rated current and suits general and moderately inductive loads such as lighting and small motors. A D-curve MCB trips at 10-20 times rated current and suits loads with high inrush, such as transformers, large motors and welding sets. B-curve (3-5 times) is for resistive loads.

Machines

If the supply voltage is the same (say 440 V), will a system designed for 60 Hz work on 50 Hz?

It will run but is over-fluxed. Flux is proportional to V/f, so at 50 Hz and the same voltage the flux rises by about 20%, pushing the core into saturation: higher magnetising current, more core loss and overheating. Motor speed also drops to five-sixths. Safe operation needs the voltage reduced in proportion, to about 367 V.

Power systems

What is corona effect?

Ionisation of the air around a high-voltage conductor when the surface electric field exceeds the breakdown strength of air (about 30 kV/cm peak at normal conditions). It shows as a violet glow, hissing noise and ozone, and causes power loss and radio interference. Larger-diameter conductors, bundled conductors and wider spacing reduce it.

Earthing

How do you measure earth resistance?

Use the fall-of-potential (three-point) method with an earth tester. Drive a current electrode well away from the electrode under test and a potential electrode in line at about 62% of that distance. The tester injects current, measures voltage between the test electrode and the potential spike, and gives R = V/I. Clamp-on testers are used where the system has multiple parallel earths.

Machines

An electric motor with constant output power will have what form of torque-speed characteristic?

A rectangular hyperbola. Power P = T x omega, so if P is constant, torque x speed is constant and torque falls in inverse proportion as speed rises. DC series motors and field-weakening drives approximate this constant-power region.

About ABB India hiring

What is the ABB GET salary in India?

Reported figures disagree. FACE Prep, citing AmbitionBox, puts ABB GET pay at ₹3.5–5 LPA, while Glassdoor shows an ₹8 LPA average base from only 8 salaries, which it marks low confidence. Expect roughly ₹3.5–8 LPA depending on business unit, location and campus.

Which branches does ABB India hire freshers from?

EEE, ECE, Instrumentation and Mechanical are reported as the main campus branches for core roles, with CSE / IT for software roles. Electrical students can also land ABB software roles: one was hired as a Software Engineer in a 2020 pooled IIT drive.

What technical questions does ABB ask electrical freshers?

Reported ABB questions cover induction motor cogging and crawling, running 60 Hz equipment on 50 Hz, C-curve vs D-curve MCBs and circuit breaker selection, earth resistance measurement, corona, transformer basics and constant-power torque-speed characteristics. Your final-year project is also discussed.
