In its latest cycle SAIL hired fresh engineers as Management Trainees (Technical) through its own computer-based test, not GATE: a 200-mark CBT, then group discussion and interview, with final merit weighted 75:10:15 (Adv. HR/REC/C-97/MTT/2025). Seven engineering disciplines were eligible with 65% marks.

- Degree in Engineering with 65% (average of all semesters; 55% for SC/ST/PwBD/departmental) in Chemical, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Instrumentation, Mechanical or Metallurgy
- ECE, Electronics & Telecommunication and Mechatronics graduates are eligible under the Instrumentation discipline
- Upper age 28 for UR (2025 cycle), relaxed by 5 years SC/ST, 3 years OBC (NCL), 10 to 15 years PwBD
- Medical minimums: 45 kg, 155 cm, myopia/hypermetropia within +/-4.00 in each eye, no colour blindness

Interview process
- 1CBT part 1: Domain Knowledge100 marks in 40 minutes on your engineering discipline. Qualify at the 50th percentile (UR/EWS) or 40th percentile (SC/ST/OBC/PwBD).
- 2CBT part 2: Aptitude100 marks in 80 minutes: Quantitative Aptitude, English, Reasoning and General Awareness, 25 marks each, with the same percentile qualifying rule.
- 3Group discussion and interviewQualified candidates are called 1:3 per discipline and category in merit order, at short notice via the SAIL careers page.
- 4Final merit and medicalCBT, GD and interview combined 75:10:15; ties go to higher CBT marks, then higher BE/BTech marks. Appointment needs SAIL's medical examination.

Does SAIL recruit Management Trainees through GATE?
Not in its latest cycle. The official 2025 advertisement (Adv. HR/REC/C-97/MTT/2025) selected 124 Management Trainees (Technical) through SAIL's own computer-based test, then GD and interview. Some sites still describe a GATE route or quote other vacancy counts, so rely on the current advert on sail.co.in or sailcareers.com.
What is the salary of a SAIL Management Trainee?
During one year of training, MTs get a basic of ₹50,000 in the ₹50,000–1,60,000 scale plus DA and perks. After training they become Assistant Managers in the E1 scale of ₹60,000–1,80,000. SAIL states a CTC of about ₹16–17 lakh a year at the E1 minimum, excluding PRP.
Can ECE students apply for SAIL MT (Technical)?
Yes. SAIL's 2025 advert lists Electronics & Communication, Electronics & Telecommunication, Electronics & Instrumentation, Mechatronics and related branches as eligible under the Instrumentation discipline, subject to 65% marks (55% reserved) and the age limit.
