Civil Engineering Interview Questions 2026: Site Engineer, Design and AE/JE

·· 8 min read

Civil engineering has the hardest placement numbers of the large branches: about 1.73 lakh students enrolled in 2024-25 and a placement rate near 42%, the lowest in the AICTE data. It also has the strongest pull towards government exams of any branch. Civil is the second-largest GATE paper, with 1,01,596 registrations in 2025, more than mechanical despite the smaller cohort, and civil takes 257 of the 540 UPSC ESE posts in 2026.

So a civil student prepares for two interview universes at once. The private route is the EPC and real-estate site-engineer job at L&T Construction, Tata Projects, Shapoorji Pallonji, AFCONS, NCC and the large developers, plus design consultancies. The government route is GATE into PSUs and NHAI, ESE, SSC JE and RRB JE, and state PSC assistant-engineer exams such as UPPSC's 604 AE posts. Both end in a technical panel, and this guide is about that panel.

How the interview actually runs

L&T Construction screens at roughly CGPA 7, runs a 60-90 minute aptitude and technical test, then a 30-45 minute technical panel that checks whether you can read a drawing and are ready for a site, then HR and a medical. Tata Projects uses an online assessment that mixes cognitive, situational-judgement and technical sections, one or two technical interviews and a values-based HR round. Shapoorji Pallonji often runs walk-ins with every round completed in a day. Fresher packages at these firms sit around Rs 4.5-6.5 LPA.

The technical panel has a pattern. It opens with your final-year project or internship, then moves to concrete: grades, water-cement ratio, slump, curing, cube tests. Then RCC basics per IS 456: cover for each element, lap and development length, stripping times, bar bending schedules. Then whatever the site does most: surveying for infrastructure, soil and foundations for buildings, estimation and billing for planning roles. The HR round is a mobility check: sites are remote and rotations are real.

Government interviews come after the written exam or GATE score. They are fundamentals-heavy personal interviews in front of departmental engineers, often with a drawing or a practical problem on the table, and they reward candidates who can explain why a code says what it says.

Concrete technology and RCC (IS 456) questions

  • Q (fresher): What does M25 mean? A: A concrete mix whose characteristic compressive strength at 28 days is 25 N/mm2 on 150 mm cubes; IS 456 sets M20 as the minimum grade for reinforced concrete.
  • Q (fresher): Why does a lower water-cement ratio give stronger concrete? A: Less excess water means fewer capillary pores in the hardened paste, so strength and durability rise; workability is recovered with admixtures rather than extra water.
  • Q (fresher): What is the slump test for? A: A workability check on site: the settlement of a cone of fresh concrete after the mould is lifted, compared with the value specified for the placement method.
  • Q (fresher): What is nominal cover and why does it change with exposure? A: The concrete between the outermost bar and the surface; IS 456 raises it from 20 mm in mild exposure to 75 mm in extreme exposure because cover is the corrosion barrier.
  • Q (fresher): What is development length? A: The embedded length a bar needs so bond stress can transfer its full design force to the concrete, expressed in bar diameters and dependent on grade, bar type and whether it is in tension or compression.
  • Q (fresher): When do you use a doubly reinforced beam? A: When the factored moment exceeds the limiting moment of the singly reinforced section and the depth is fixed by headroom, so compression steel is added.
  • Q (experienced): What does IS 13920 change in a column? A: Confining reinforcement: closely spaced hoops over the end regions and through the joint, sized so the column can sustain plastic rotation without losing its core during an earthquake.

Strength of materials and structural analysis questions

  • Q (fresher): State Lami's theorem. A: When three concurrent coplanar forces hold a body in equilibrium, each is proportional to the sine of the angle between the other two.
  • Q (fresher): What is the parallel axis theorem? A: The moment of inertia about any axis equals that about the parallel centroidal axis plus the area times the square of the distance between the axes.
  • Q (fresher): Where is the bending moment maximum in a beam? A: At the section where the shear force changes sign; on a simply supported beam under uniform load that is midspan.
  • Q (fresher): What is the difference between determinate and indeterminate structures? A: A determinate structure can be solved by equilibrium alone; an indeterminate one has more unknown reactions or member forces than equilibrium equations and needs compatibility of deformations.
  • Q (experienced): What is the response reduction factor R in IS 1893? A: The factor by which the elastic seismic force is divided to obtain the design force, reflecting the ductility and overstrength of the framing system; a ductile moment frame gets a higher R than an ordinary one.

Geotechnical and foundation questions

  • Q (fresher): What is consolidation? A: Time-dependent settlement of saturated clay as pore water is squeezed out under load, with the rate governed by the coefficient of consolidation from the oedometer test.
  • Q (fresher): What is safe bearing capacity? A: The ultimate bearing capacity divided by a factor of safety, usually 2.5 to 3, checked against allowable settlement, computed per IS 6403.
  • Q (fresher): When do you go for pile foundations? A: When the competent stratum is too deep for shallow footings, when loads are heavy or when settlement must be controlled; IS 2911 covers design and load testing.
  • Q (fresher): What does the Proctor test give? A: The maximum dry density and the optimum moisture content of a soil, which set the compaction target on an embankment or a formation.

Surveying, transportation and environmental questions

  • Q (fresher): What does a total station measure? A: Slope distance by electronic distance measurement, plus horizontal and vertical angles, from which it computes coordinates directly.
  • Q (fresher): What is CBR and why does pavement design depend on it? A: California bearing ratio, the strength of the subgrade relative to a standard crushed stone; IRC 37 selects flexible pavement thickness from CBR and design traffic in million standard axles.
  • Q (fresher): What is superelevation and what is its maximum? A: The transverse slope given to a curve to counter centrifugal force; IRC limits it to 7% on plain and rolling terrain and 10% in hilly terrain not bound by snow.
  • Q (fresher): What do BOD and COD tell you? A: Biochemical oxygen demand measures oxygen consumed by microbes degrading organic matter over five days; chemical oxygen demand measures total oxidisable matter chemically, so COD is always the larger.

Site execution, QA/QC, estimation and contracts questions

  • Q (fresher): How do you check concrete strength on site? A: Cube tests per IS 516 at 7 and 28 days as the acceptance test, with rebound hammer and ultrasonic pulse velocity as non-destructive checks on the structure and core tests when cubes fail.
  • Q (fresher): What is a bar bending schedule? A: A tabulated list of every reinforcement bar with shape, diameter, cut length, bending dimensions and quantity, prepared from the drawings so bars can be cut, bent, checked and billed.
  • Q (fresher): What is IS 1200? A: The Indian standard for the method of measurement of building and civil works, which fixes how each item in a bill of quantities is measured and deducted.
  • Q (experienced): How do you claim an extension of time under FIDIC? A: By notifying the engineer within the contractual period, demonstrating the delay event was outside your control and on the critical path, and quantifying its effect with the updated programme.
  • Q (experienced): What is float and why does the client care? A: The time an activity can slip without delaying completion; the ownership of float decides who absorbs a delay, which is why it is contested in claims.
  • Q (experienced): What is the permit-to-work system on a site? A: A written authorisation for high-risk activities such as work at height, confined spaces, hot work and excavation, listing controls, PPE and gas tests, valid for a shift.

What experienced engineers get asked

Site and planning roles (2-5 years) are interviewed on execution sequencing and formwork systems, QA/QC and NCR handling, Primavera P6 or MS Project schedules and look-aheads, earned value (CPI and SPI), RA billing and reconciliation of cement and steel, and contract clauses under FIDIC or CPWD GCC: variations, extensions of time, liquidated damages, retention and defect liability.

Structural designers are interviewed on limit-state design per IS 456 and IS 800, loads per IS 875, seismic design per IS 1893 and detailing per IS 13920, foundation design per IS 2911, and how they validate ETABS or STAAD output by hand. Transportation and bridge designers add IRC 6 loading, IRC 112 and IRC 37/58. Quantity surveyors add DSR rate analysis, IS 1200 measurement and escalation clauses. Project managers are asked about cost-to-complete, client management, safety statistics and how they recovered a slipping schedule.

The government route

State AE and JE interviews, CPWD, NHAI and railway interviews sit after the written exam and stay close to the undergraduate syllabus: concrete, RCC, steel, soil, surveying, highways, water supply and sanitation, estimation. The differences from a company panel are the depth of derivation expected and the practical questions about departmental work: how you would inspect a culvert, why a road fails, how you check a contractor's bill. ESE interviews add general awareness and personality assessment. The infrastructure pipeline is large - NHAI alone targets over 5,000 km of highway in FY26 - so these posts recur every year.

A 4-week plan

  • Week 1: Concrete technology, RCC fundamentals and strength of materials from the Civil Core section, 40 questions a day, with the IS 456 cover and development-length values memorised.
  • Week 2: Structural analysis, geotechnical, surveying and transportation; redraw a set of GFC drawings and prepare a bar bending schedule for one beam.
  • Week 3: Site and project management from the Site and Project Mgmt section for execution roles, or the Civil Design and Codes section for design roles; take the free 2-minute readiness check on your stream.
  • Week 4: Recruiter pages for L&T, Tata Projects and the PSUs, timed aptitude, and two full mock interviews at your target level.
