Expand character-count pairs, e.g. 'a1b10' becomes 'abbbbbbbbbb'.
Scan left to right: read a character, then read all following digits to build the count (count = count * 10 + digit, so '10' means ten), and append the character that many times. O(n + output length) time. The usual trap is assuming single-digit counts.
Sort elements at odd positions in descending order and at even positions in ascending order: 13,2,4,15,12,10,5 becomes 13,2,12,10,5,15,4.
Positions are 1-based. Copy the odd-position values (13,4,12,5) and sort them descending (13,12,5,4); copy the even-position values (2,15,10) and sort ascending (2,10,15); write them back alternately. O(n log n) time, O(n) extra space.
Find the first non-repeating character in a string in one pass.
Keep a count per character and a queue of characters in first-seen order. For each character, increment its count and enqueue it if new, then pop from the front while the front's count is above 1. After the pass, the front is the answer (or none). O(n) time, O(alphabet size) space.
Validate a binary search tree.
Recurse with an allowed range: each node's value must be strictly between low and high; check the left child with (low, node.val) and the right with (node.val, high). Start unbounded, or use long bounds so Integer.MIN_VALUE nodes work. Alternatively, an in-order traversal must be strictly increasing. O(n) time, O(h) stack space.
Find the first missing positive integer in an array.
Cyclic placement: for each index, while 1 <= a[i] <= n and a[a[i]-1] != a[i], swap a[i] into index a[i]-1. Then the first index i with a[i] != i+1 gives i+1; if none, the answer is n+1. O(n) time, O(1) extra space. A hash set is simpler but uses O(n) space.

Encapsulation hides internal state by bundling data with the methods that use it and restricting access with private fields and getters/setters.
